    Petition: Feb 1, 2022

Boris Johnson has broken the rules and lied to Parliament and the country, it is clear to so many that he must now resign.

Buckingham MP Greg Smith still supports Boris Johnson. While a majority of people in this country want Johnson to resign.

If Greg Smith understands the anger of his constituents, he will be joining us and calling on Boris Johnson to resign.

Buckinghamshire is set to be hit hard by the expected rise in energy bills in April, new figures have revealed.

Analysis by the Liberal Democrats shows that the average yearly bill for homeowners in Buckinghamshire is set to skyrocket by £595 - the equivalent of £49.58 a month - once the new energy price cap comes into effect.

    Solving the Supply Chain Crisis

It's time for Boris Johnson and co. to grow up and face the consequences of their actions.

By Sarah Olney, Sep 20, 2021

Boris Johnson's woeful government has done it again.

Their needless belligerence towards our neighbours has devastated the national supply chain. Shelves are bare and prices will rise.

By refusing to work with the European Union, importing and exporting goods has become much harder. The skilled worker visa system brings high costs, inflexibility and bureaucracy. It's too hard to hire from the EU, and many EU nationals have gone home. And that's all thanks to this divisive government.

These problems will hurt those worst off - right as Rishi Sunak takes £20 a week out of their Universal Credit.

    It's not sustainable.

Last month at conference, Liberal Democrats passed an emergency motion that reaffirmed our commitment to a better way:

    • Making the £20 per week Universal Credit uplift permanent
    • Fight for free movement of people between the UK and Europe A National Food strategy.
    • This would promote the production and consumption of healthy, sustainable and affordable food.

We also voted for several new measures, including:

    • Scrapping the arbitrary salary threshold for work visas, so British businesses can hire the staff they need
    • Engage with local authorities to minimise the impact on local services
    • Legally prevent future governments from ramming through trade deals. Parliamentary scrutiny and approval should be central to any future deal.

    Read the full motion

This Government was repeatedly told the consequences of acting the way that it has. It's time for Boris Johnson and co. to grow up and face the consequences of their actions. They must ensure nobody suffers for their mistakes.

  • Back The Plan
    Article: Oct 1, 2021

The Conservatives have a lot to say about the climate crisis. But they're consistently failing to back their words up with action.

By Liberal Democrats, Oct 01, 2021

Come see us in Haddenham at the Climate Matters Conference in the Village Hall on 3rd October., 2.30pm.

    Chimey stacks with smoke

With COP just weeks away, the Prime Minister has been urging countries to announce meaningful cuts to emissions.

But his speech hides something entirely different. His Government are failing to make progress on cutting emissions and are instead going backwards.

    1. Tree planting humiliation

In the 2019 election the Conservatives promised to plant 30,000 hectares of trees a year by 2024. But rather than increasing they're actually going backwards.

Last year just 2,200 hectares were planted, compared to a still embarrassingly small 2,340 the year before.

And guess what? This year is on course to be a three-year low. Between April and June just 469 hectares were planted. If projected for the whole year, that would mean 1,876 hectares will be planted.

Liberal Democrats are calling for a £150 billion Green Recovery Plan, including planting at least 60 million trees a year to cut emissions and restore woodlands.

    2. Green homes failure

Last Autumn, the Government launched the Green Homes Grant - aiming to upgrade 600,000 homes with insulation and low-carbon heating.

In just six months, the scheme was closed after being mismanaged by the Government and the Virginia-based firm they outsourced it to.

In that time only 31,900 homes were upgraded - a complete failure. Meanwhile, a similar scheme available to local councils has seen just an extra 3,000 homes benefit from upgrades.

Liberal Democrats are calling for a £150 billion Green Recovery Plan, including an emergency ten-year programme to reduce energy consumption from all buildings. This will cut emissions and energy bills and end fuel poverty.

    3. Toxic air delays

In 2017 the Government directed 61 councils to develop plans as quickly as possible to cut levels of toxic air pollution.

But since then, only three clean air zones have been put in place. London, Birmingham and Liberal Democrat-run Bath and North East Somerset. Portsmouth, also run by Lib Dems, is launching their own this year.

The Government has in fact allowed local authorities to delay their plans to clean up our toxic air. That's despite air pollution being linked to 40,000 early deaths each year.

Liberal Democrats are calling for a £150 billion Green Recovery Plan, including passing a Clean Air Act, to enshrine your legal right to unpolluted air wherever you live.

    4. Permitting a new coal mine

The Conservatives are failing to show climate leadership. They're dithering over whether to stop a new coal mine being considered in West Cumbria.

Opening this coal mine would mean that we will struggle to cut our emissions, while exporting the coal will drive down the price of coal in steel making, making it more likely that carbon emissions will rise.

After 2035, if we are to reach net-zero, the use of coal in steel making must stop.

Yet the Conservatives have failed to put a stop to it. They have finally called in the planning application, but we likely won't have a decision for months.

Liberal Democrats are calling for a £150 billion Green Recovery Plan, including the cancelling of this coal mine and increasing investment in green steel and supporting industry to find net-zero alternatives.

The Conservatives simply cannot be trusted to tackle the climate emergency.
In the year the UK is hosting the UN climate conference, they should be leading by example.

We need a plan that works, now.

Will you stand with us today, and back our plan?

Come see us in Haddenham at the Climate Matters Conference in the Village Hall on 3rd October., 2.30pm.

In our new film, Ed Davey sets out a vision for a fair deal for future generations.

    By Liberal Democrats

"We all fear that in the end, it will be our children who have paid the price of this pandemic." ~ Ed Davey

Boris Johnson's failure to defend our children's education meant that his Government spent the same amount in one month on Eat Out To Help Out as in a whole year for our children's school catch-up.

Imagine a future where our children's education is a priority. Where schools raise their mental well-being and their maths grades. Where they can excel at English and find their talent for music or sport. Where they grow into happy, healthy, adults.

The Liberal Democrats are calling for a £15 billion package of education catch-up funding, as recommended by the Government's former Education Recovery Commissioner, Sir Kevan Collins.

As part of this, the party is calling for a £5 billion programme of Catch-Up Vouchers for every school child, putting the money directly into parents' hands to spend on whatever their children need most: tutoring in reading, writing or maths; music lessons; swimming classes or other physical education.

We heard that loud and clear on the doorsteps of Chesham and Amersham - a typical "Blue Wall seat." They told us that too often this Government hasn't listened, has taken people for granted, has ignored the people who work hard, and pay taxes.

When we won the Chesham and Amersham by-election, people told us Boris Johnson was taking them for granted. They told us our victory was the first time in years they'd been listened to. Britain needs a party prepared to listen.

It is time Boris Johnson's Conservatives stopped taking people for granted, time people got a fairer deal, time we guaranteed a better life for future generations.

  • LGBT+ Rainbow Flags
    Article: Sep 18, 2021

A 2017 government survey found that almost 1 in 13 LGBT+ have been offered or had conversion therapy. This rises to 1 in 7 amongst transgender people. Over half of these conversion therapy practices are carried out by faith organisations.

As Liberal Democrats we champion the Individual right to privacy and autonomy. This must include the right to medical autonomy for adults.

    Conversion therapy is incredibly harmful.

    Conversion therapy is incredibly harmful"

It is a predatory practice which is able to take hold due to the ongoing social exclusion that the LGBT+ community faces every day. Conversion therapy aims to suppress a person's gender identity or change their sexual orientation.

NHS England has stated that conversion therapy has "no medical or theraputic value". It is essential we put a stop to this abhorrent practice.

It is essential we put a stop to this abhorrent practice"

Today at our conference, members called on the Government for:

    • A criminal ban on conversion therapy in all forms.
    • A criminal ban on referrals, transportations of minors overseas and any advertising for forms of conversion therapy.
    • A campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of conversion therapy among vulnerable people.

Read our new policy in full

Despite repeated promises, the Government has failed to put forward legislation which will end conversion therapy. We are calling on the Government to do more.

As liberals we must fight to build a free and fair society where everyone can be themselves.

That's why we must end conversion therapy, once and for all.

Taking on Big-Tech: They must pay their taxes

Changes to our global tax system are long overdue. The largest and most profitable global companies must pay their fair share in taxes, just like the rest of us.

    By Christine Jardine, Sep 17, 2021 7:09

The world's largest and most successful companies, including Google, Amazon and Facebook, are avoiding paying taxes in the countries where they operate. Instead, they shift their profits and hide in tax havens.

they shift their profits and hide in tax havens"

They must pay their fair share. And to do that, we need a global minimum corporation tax.

Amazon paid just £293m in tax in the UK last year, while its sales surged by 26% to £13.73bn.

    This isn't right.

At the G7 summit in June, major economies reached an international consensus on tackling tax avoidance. The Lib Dems are proud to support the breakthrough championed by President Biden for a global corporation tax rate.

Big business must pay their way. But the UK Government failed to push through some key improvements that would have made the system fairer and more effective.

Big business must pay their way"

To press the Government to improve the deal, our members at conference today voted for new policy:

    1. Backing President Biden's proposal for a global minimum rate of corporation tax at 21%
    2. Closing loopholes which could allow tech-giants such as Amazon to avoid tax due to a 10% profit threshold.
    3. Keeping the Digital Service Tax until the deal is finalised. This is the tax on search engines, social media platforms and online marketplaces. Withdrawing from this as the government plans could result in a combined tax cut of £232.5 million for Amazon, Facebook, Google and eBay.
    4. Work with low and middle-income countries to ensure the global corporation tax rate benefits them too.

Read our new policy in full

Tax dodging is entirely unacceptable. Internet-based multinationals such as Amazon are some of the most valuable and profitable companies in the world.

These corporations must pay their way.

Creating a fair global tax system calls for greater international cooperation. We must do more to listen to the concerns of low and middle-income countries. We must ensure the legislation we pass does not result in a tax cut for the world's most profitable companies.

The Lib Dems are calling out the Government. We all pay taxes to contribute to our society. The time has come for big business to contribute too.

Businesses and workers need certainty and support

The government has failed to address the problems faced by small businesses in this pandemic.

    By Sarah Olney, Sep 17, 2021 4:09

99% of businesses in our economy are small businesses. Unfortunately the Government is simply not doing enough to protect them.

The pandemic devastated small businesses as they were forced shut overnight. Retail and hospitality were among the hardest hit. As a result, many businesses are in a rent-arrears crisis with unpaid commercial rent totalling £6 billion.

    The pandemic devastated small businesses"

Covid-19 also took a toll on the UK's towns and highstreets. People lost employment opportunities in the area and the sense of community fostered by local businesses. The Federation of Small Business has released a dire warning that 250,000 businesses could be forced to close by the end of the year.

250,000 businesses could be forced to close by the end of the year"

Small businesses can't have their problems ignored. They need action now.

Today at conference our members called for dedicated support schemes to protect those sectors worst affected by Covid. Included in our small business support package is:

    • Giving all small businesses a cash injection to create jobs. We would do this by quadrupling annual Employment Allowance for two years, allowing them to pay zero national insurance contributions for for their first five employees
    • Maintaining the 5% VAT for hospitality and tourism until the end of 2021/22.
    • Supporting jobs that are still impacted by the pandemic, by extending furlough and self employed income support to the end of 2021.
    • Members also called on the Government to fix Kickstart and focus on tackling unemployment amongst young people - especially from a black and ethnic minority background.
    • Helping small businesses trade with the EU by renewing the Brexit Support Fund.
    • Unifying all the information on UK-EU trade on a single platform where it is easily accessible.

Read our new policy in full

This government has failed countless small businesses and employees during this pandemic. We call for clear policy and not last minute knee-jerk reactions.

It is urgent that the government puts in place the right support for economic recovery post pandemic.

We must act now to ensure our economy is open, fair and creates new job opportunities.
