Big win for Lib Dems in Bucks

The Liberal Democrats scored an emphatic win in the Aylesbury Vale District Council by-election for Aylesbury Central ward.

The party took over 50% of the vote, despite facing three other candidates.

The failure by the Tories to make significant inroads after working so hard to wrest the seat suggest that David Cameron's party is nowhere near "sealing the deal" with local voters.

The Luffied Abbey by-election to Aylesbury Vale District Council was held on the same day. The Tories, as expected, held a seat where, at the last two elections in 2003 and 2007 it had scored comfortable wins.

Ian Metherell, for the Liberal Democrats, won just under 20% of the vote, a creditable result from a standing start in a ward where the party had no strength.
