Lib Dems renew call for Oxford/ Milton Keynes rail extension

May 31, 2009 4:11 PM

Lib Dems at Vale Parkway stationLiberal Democrat candidates for the Bucks County Council elections have stepped up their call for the Oxford/ Milton Keynes rail extension to go ahead as soon as possible, and have backed proposals that will make it more likely that train companies will invest in badly needed improvements.

Lib Dem candidates fighting divisions on or adjoining the line - Llew Monger, candidate for Winslow, Ian Metherell fighting Grendon Underwood and Bette Melling candidate for the Bernwood Division - have called for the rail improvement in Bucks after business regulator, the Competition Commission, said the Government should allow train companies to have longer periods of time to run services.

Llew Monger said: ''East West rail will be a great benefit to Aylesbury Vale in general but it is Winslow and North Bucks which really gain. It will bring a much needed addition to rural transport options in this area.''

Ian Metherell commented: " I have supported this vital rail link ever since the idea was first proposed. It is high time something was done to start the project, given that it will take some time to complete."

Loca Lib Dems believe the rail extension is massively important to Aylesbury Vale's economy and the reduction of road traffic to and from Oxford and Milton Keynes. People drive into Aylesbury to work and shop causing traffic jams backing up for miles every day.

With the Vale's population set to grow with housing growth it is vital that the infrastructure is in place to meet commuter demand. The Berryfields development just opposite the new Aylesbury Vale Parkway station, will have thousands of residents when it is completed.

A fully operational commuter train link with Aylesbury could cut commuter traffic and congestion by a huge amount.
